Clean drinking water for a whole community

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters at Gompels Healthcare, we have been able to fund a large-scale water project in one quarter of Bamenda (Ntamafe 11) which will improve the health of around 150 households (800 people) and the 400 pupils of the local school.

Until now, the children from these families – whose job it is to collect water – would have to wait in line at the water catchment area to fill their containers for the family’s needs.  The wait was usually very long and children would miss significant amounts of their school time.  Water from the catchment was not reliably clean and the incidence of water borne disease was high in this area.

This project has seen the construction of a new, 15m high, tank with filters and a solar powered pump to take the clean drinking water to six newly constructed stand taps, stretching across the whole of Ntamafe 11.  Appropriate trees have also been planted at the catchment in order to protect it.  The outcomes from this project are expected to be that waiting times for water collection will be reduced to less than five minutes, children will not lose any study time at school, general living standards and students’ academic performance will improve and there will be a drop in the incidence of water borne disease.
