A new school coming soon to Mayo Linwa

Earlier this year the village of Peere in Mayo Linwa, Adamawa Region, was struck by high winds which tore the roof off the only classroom at their primary school. The walls of the classroom, made from mud blocks, soon collapsed in the rains. The parents of the 361 children who were enrolled in the school, hurriedly put up more grass huts to act as classrooms. It was a pitiful sight and a desperate situation for the children, who are so keen to learn. We were very pleased to be able to provide the funds to construct three solid classrooms, a teachers’ office and a latrine at this school, which is due to be handed over to the community later this month (September 2024).
However, it has not been an easy project to complete. The village is extremely remote with very poor internet connection and sporadic mobile network coverage, so it was difficult to co-ordinate the delivery of the necessary materials and to send through photos of progress. In addition, the road from the nearest depot to the village was treacherous during the rainy season and it took two lorries, loaded with materials, 3 days to travel the 54Km distance to the school. Nonetheless, the project is almost finished and the children have already begun using the classrooms now that the new school year has started. We will be posting photos of the completed school and opening ceremony in the next few weeks.
