The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have announced an open call for a year-long museum fellowship programme, developed to educate a new generation of art and museum professionals in Africa.
The seven successful applicants will be expected to participate in the full 12-month study programme on a full-time basis from February 2025 to January 2026.
Based in Cape Town, this pan-African programme aims to foster the growth of curatorial practice as well as advance scholarship on contemporary art discourse from the continent. During the 12-month museum fellowship programme, fellows will engage in discourse around contemporary art, curatorial practice, art education, conservation, heritage and museology from Africa and the African diaspora. They will study and work with both institutions towards an accredited BA Honours qualification. This includes enrolling in courses on historiography, curatorship, museums, heritage and public history at UWC’s History Department and Centre of Humanities Research (CHR) as well as obtaining work experience at Zeitz MOCAA in the Curatorial, Collection Management, Art Education and Institutional Advancement departments. Successful fellows will actively contribute to the research, planning, execution and management of Zeitz MOCAA projects, ranging from exhibitions, publishing and public programming to art education and fundraising.
Eligible applicants must be citizens of an African country, and they will preferably have:
a bachelor’s degree in art history, curatorial studies, political science, history, heritage or museum studies or other relevant humanities field, with a demonstrated capacity to work at a postgraduate level;
knowledge of contemporary art and heritage from Africa and the African diaspora;
excellent writing skills;
2–3 years of relevant work experience; and
proficiency in English.
The programme covers tuition, accommodation, basic health insurance and a monthly stipend. Travel to South Africa and visa costs are not included.
Only the first 100 applications received will be considered for review.
Deadline: 30 June 2024
